When the hoof gets very wet, it expands, when it dries out again, it
contracts; the hoof is at it's strongest when it is in a fairly dry condition.
What causes damage in the summer, is rapid drying and then wetting; this causes
the structure of the foot to break down.
In the winter, in boggy conditions the hoof can absorb too much water, the
waterlogged hoof is less resistant to damage as the molecular structure is
looser due to expansion.
If your horses frogs are disappearing and there is any smelly black
discharge, it probably has Thrush, in which case use a good hoof disinfectant
such as Net -Tex Frog Health.
If you have tried hoof disinfectants, but the tissues are clean, i.e.
no smelly black discharge indicating Thrush, then it's quite likely to be that
the foot is absorbing too much water; it is becoming an increasing problem, so
by using a product such as Net -Tex Winter Hoof that
provides a breathable film, it will allow the hoof to breathe, which is vital,
whilst keeping out excess water and maintaining a normal moisture content within
the hoof.

Review - Net -Tex Winter Hoof
My Mare works barefoot over different types of ground
such as roadwork, bridleways consisting of bog and flint, as well as schooling
on grass and hacking through deep mud in the winter.
(Hooves are strongest when
they are fairly dry but pliable, but not very dry and brittle.)
The only problems she ever has are moisture related; as soon
as we have the rain, her frogs and the bulbs of her heels start to disintegrate,
having first treated them for Thrush to ensure there was no infection, i spoke
to Net-Tex and decide to try their Winter Hoof, as it provides a
breathable barrier to help control the amount of moisture that the hoof absorbs.
When i started using it, my mares frogs were really eaten
away and the bulbs of her heels were looking moth eaten; she was quite
"footy" when hacking out as it was sore when taking the weight on the
back part of her foot, so she wasn't walking out at all. By the time we got to 11
days of using the Net-Tex Winter Hoof, she was walking
beautifully and free as well as offering me an extended trot, so even
though at that early stage, there wasn't a great deal of difference to the eye,
she was obviously feeling a huge benefit and has continued to do so.
At the time of writing this, I've been using it for 5 weeks
and the frogs are now rebuilding nicely, helped by the inclusion of Biotin, Vitamin B Complex, and Keratin to supplement the
growth and strengthening of the hoof wall.
I am very impressed with this
product and would most certainly recommend it's use as part of your
routine grooming & Winter Hoof care routine.
It is the product to use to stabilize the hoof moisture of
horse and ponies who are turned out during the day and stabled at night as the
constant wetting and drying of the hoof is detrimental to it's structure.
